I collect places through memory, drawn to what remains after an experience, the fragments, sensations and impressions that linger long after the moment has passed.
Born in Rotterdam in 1997, Julie Haverkamp is a Dutch multidisciplinary artist working across painting, ceramics and wood. She studied at the Amsterdam Fashion Institute Fashion and Branding gratuadted in 2021, where she developed an understanding of material, composition and visual storytelling that continues to inform her practice. Haverkamp used to live in Ibiza and maintains an atelier in Bloemendaal. Moving between these environments, she explores the relationship between landscape, memory and material through works that sit between figuration and abstraction.
Julie Haverkamp began with portraiture, using painting as a space for concentration and emotional stillness. Over time, the figure became less explicit and her work developed into a broader investigation of atmosphere, surface and sensory experience. Her paintings are built through expressive brushwork, layered pigment and natural materials such as sand, linen and raw cotton. These additions give the work a tactile presence, allowing paint to function not only as image but also as physical matter.
A tension between energy and restraint runs throughout Haverkamp's practice. Broad gestures are balanced by quieter areas; dense surfaces meet open space. The works can feel impulsive and meditative at once. Since relocating to Ibiza, the island's changing light, sea, vegetation and slower rhythm have become important points of departure. Haverkamp does not depict the landscape literally. Instead, she translates fleeting impressions into colour, texture and spatial rhythm, allowing a place to be felt rather than described.
This investigation continues in her sculptural wall works. FRAGMENTS combines individually formed ceramic elements with oak, reflecting the way memories are held as partial impressions rather than complete stories. Each ceramic fragment retains its own shape and surface, while the composition creates a larger field of connection. Light and shadow shift across the work throughout the day, making perception itself part of the piece.
REMNANTS developed from FRAGMENTS and focuses on what remains after a moment, movement or feeling has passed. Inspired by Ibiza's continually changing landscapes, these layered ceramic works give physical form to transience, connection and the desire to hold on to what cannot be fixed. Across painting and sculpture, Julie Haverkamp creates works that invite contemplation rather than explanation.
