Born in 1986, Harry Cussins is a British abstract painter based in Amsterdam. His paintings draw on lived experience, but they do not illustrate events directly. Instead, memories, moods and physical sensations are translated through colour, gesture and space. Each work begins from a particular emotional register. The first mark establishes a direction, after which the painting develops through an exchange between intuitive movement and deliberate adjustment.
Harry Cussins works with energetic brushstrokes, free-flowing lines and spontaneous areas of colour. His compositions often shift between the suggestion of a landscape and a more open field of marks. Forms may briefly resemble a body, object or horizon before dissolving back into abstraction. This movement between recognition and uncertainty gives the work its rhythm. Nothing remains fixed for long, yet recurring gestures and spatial tensions create continuity across the practice.
Nature is an important point of departure, particularly the rural English landscape in which Cussins grew up. The body, everyday objects, places and sound also enter the work. These sources are not treated as separate subjects. They are absorbed into a painterly vocabulary concerned with movement, balance and the way space is felt. A painting may carry the pace of walking, the repetition of music or the pressure of a remembered encounter without describing any of them literally.
Cussins allows contradiction to remain visible. Loose, impulsive marks meet controlled passages; broad areas of colour are interrupted by sharper edges or quieter intervals. The work can feel immediate while revealing a slower process of revision beneath the surface. This oscillation between freedom and structure is central to his practice.
