Matthew van Liessum [1989] is a Dutch contemporary artist who currently lives and works in Antwerp. His abstract compositions embody gestural dynamism, expressive movement, and compositional harmony. Rooted in abstract expressionism yet informed by contemporary influences, his practice embraces fluidity in form, medium, and technique.

As self-taught artist, Matthew approaches painting instinctively, allowing his work to unfold without a predetermined framework. His process is physical and immersive—moving around the canvas laid on the floor, applying paint with his hands, sticks, brushes, and unconventional tools. He deliberately leaves his works Untitled, inviting viewers to engage without the constraints of imposed meaning.

Music is integral to his creative process, shaping the rhythm and energy of his compositions. With a background as a recording artist, sound and movement inform his approach, forging a dialogue between visual and auditory expression.
